Yes there is. If a family quit going to church or quit paying their tithe the church would send out child-protective services to investigate whether the family was still moral enough to keep the adopted child. It was a simple shakedown scheme with the baby hostage.

churches are surviving just fine.
Not every church was involved in the scheme. Some have new money making schemes like for profit schools.
