>>I asked about using external JAZ drives to backup in archive mode. He got a pained look and said that there were fewer problems with backups verses direct recording, but he would still suggest using either a ZIP drive in archive mode (his first choice) or a SyJet (either recording directly to it, or archiving on it).<<

I agree. You'd have to be nuts to record directly on a removable if you have a fixed drive as an option. I have an E-Mu Sampler, and I use a SyJet to back up. My next purchase will be a Roland VS-880. I will stuff it with the biggest fixed hard drive it can handle to actually record the music- and use my SyJet as a backup only. I have had several friends in this business who have had disastors using Jaz drives.

Roland and E-Mu are experiencing serious problems with JAZ drive media. It's not the drives, it's the media, so the problem is intermittent. The problem is critical and unrecoverable dropout. It's enough of a problem that both manufacturers are taking serious action.
E-Mu recalled all JAZ equiped samplers from dealer stock, and is replacing the drives with hard disks.
Roland has discontinued production of the VS880s with internal JAZ drives.<<

Fred -

I'd love to know the source of this information. From what Rocky Reid has said, Roland stopped equipping VS880s with Jaz more than a year ago, which would certainly make this old news.

Don't know anything about Emu, though.

I think I'll take a trip up to Sam Ash Music and ask them about this.
