I think you point to a broader problem which is the propaganda battle, in which some people cherry-pick the data to suit their purposes.

For example on banning assault rifles when it has been shown they are not a significant part of the problem. Still, we have people running around on this thread talking about banning assault rifles.

Because everyone knows you can't ban handguns with which most murders occur.

Apples and pineapples, Tim. Per usual. It is much more difficult to kill someone with a knife than a gun. And it can be defended against easier. Mass killings with knives do occur, but they are very rare for those reasons.
