I was going to go back and reply to myself (since I knew it was too late to edit) about how some of those points won't apply depending on what caliber you change it too, but you beat me to it.

They do apply for stock 5.56 your not going to use that for very long range or big game hunting. But with something like a .338 that isn't true anymore (except for real big game, you wouldn't want to go after an elephant or rhino with out something real serious.

And even for that, under the category in your list of "Calibers which will not feed but which are used in rifles where the receiver functions only as a trigger group", a .50BMG should do the job.
