Bill, re:<Screwdriver Shops> I always try to talk people out of buying the name brands also.

In a real sense,

Intel is to AMD
as
Name Brands are to Clones.

This is becoming more and more true as Intel tries to force people into using their proprietary standards. Their slogan might as well be "Nothing but Intel Inside."

Bill:
You are exactly correct. See my later message. When I
bought my First Computer it was a Packard Bell 486 SX 33 and as
I began to ask questions and read I found that I was at a
disadvantage with no Coprocessor so here the "Intel Inside"
made no difference. When I decided to upgrade I fpond that no
only the case was Proprietary but so was the Motherboard and
I lost 4 Megs of Memory converting over as the Memory was
"hard wired " to the Proprietary MB.This was when Memory wasnt
cheap as it is now. When I went to buy my present Computer a few
months ago when Prices started to come down(They are even less
now.) I went all around and looked. Cheapest 233MHZ MMX I could
find was $1499 with Monitor sold separately. I looked in Computer
shopper but after getting no response to my E-mail on most I
decided against the Mail Order there. I went to a "screw driver"
shop where I knew they did good work from previous experience
and there prices are in line with "Computer shopper". I got the
same Computer advertised for $1499 and no Monitor for $1299
and a 15 inch .28 Monitor included.This with a 24XCD Rom and 32
Megs memory.I then got an upgrade. $59.00 for an upgrade from the
2 Meg Generic Video Card to a Diamond Stealth 4meg 2400 XL 3D
and $60.00 for an upgrade to a Creative Labs AWE 64 Value Sound
card form the 16 bit Ensonic. Having checked Computer Shopper
I knew these were in line.Best of all I was not charged Labor for
the Upgrades like Comp USA etc. I also got 16 more megs Memory and
again no Labor Charge.I have a 3 year warranty on the Monitor and
I believe its 2 years on the Computer although some Components
might be longer such as the Video Card.
