Penni, I had not read your post to Del when I wrote mine to you. I guess that I AM in favor of forbidding Christian music at schools during the holidays. This is NOT the law of the land, incidentally. The legal guidelines to this date for the most part just insist that religious music is balanced with other kinds of carols. I am not sure that I think it is necessary to ban Christian music entirely forever, but when we can agree to teach American school children that what they are really celebrating is pagan and has to do with the coldness of the season and the end of of the year, and that Christ was most likely born in the spring and that there was no celebration of his birth for several hundred years, but that in order to make Christianity more popular his birthday was added to what was already a very rich seasonal celebration, and that the lights and candles, trees, holly, ivy, mistletoe, feasting and exchanging of presents are all from non-Christian belief systems, then I will feel that the holiday is balanced and inclusive enough so that I can simply not listen to the religious words and enjoy the musical presentation anyway.

But do you know any cool Druid holiday songs? A little sun-worshipping music, since that is really what we are all really doing? I personally think that what I wrote sounds so far-fetched in the sense of it ever happening, that one would quickly realize that in America, the Christians have taken over this holiday, and that this will never be!!

It is about twenty five degrees here in front of the computer, as I struggle to type with frozen fingers, and I have just decided that this year, I am going to MAKE some rum balls!!! So duck and cover!!! At least I will be pleasantly warm when they are in my tummy!!!

Oh no!!! The ACLU? This organization is even scarier to me in some aspects than Christian music, Penni!!! I am getting so confused now I am not sure what I think. It certainly arouses the same sort of strong passions, for sure!!!

Are you generally in favor of ACLU positions? They are so all over the map, or something, and some of the things they do I agree with, but in a way I think if criminals didn't have quite so many rights, we wouldn't need handguns in America.

Okay, that is totally twisted, I realize. I guess I have been listening too much Chipmunks music!!!!

Hi miss penni, I have no problem with exposing children to different religious songs and ideas. The trouble is, it is never balanced. It is always heavily weighted to the Christian side. They seem to think that any other belief is not worthwhile. I once suggested at a school board meeting that the children should learn about the basic tenets of the different religions and humanism and they would have none of that. I heard comments by some parents that they didn't want their children exposed to that kind of garbage. Try it sometime.

I did protest some of the flagrant violations at our school to no avail. For some reason my son was never given a solo at the band concerts even though he was probably one of the best musicians. Getting the ACLU involved would be inviting a bullet in the back in a small town like this. I have had verbal threats already. In addition, my wife made it clear that she would not support me.

Here's an interesting little Christmas story. About 1983 I was invited by Madalyn O'hare to a "Solstice" party at her house because I had volunteered some time at the Athiest center in Austin. We were greeted at the door by her son Garth, who was also an avowed Athiest. Just inside, in the hallway, was a tape recorder playing "Noel". I asked Garth "Hey Garth, what is this this all about?" He replied "Hey, I like the song, O.K.?"

Don't tell anyone, O.K., penni?

Del

You still didn't tell me. Did you sing or play an instrument or what?
