But that the advantage doesn't last, and before middle school/junior high they are about even with the kids who didn't start early>> That is not true it does last. Almost all learning is done at the unconscious level and the brain is like a quantum computer it doesn't forget stuff. In fact, one study they did I read years ago showed the children who were born in India and left for England by the age of one were able to learn the Indian language much much easier than people who had never been to India at all. I don't know where you're getting your information from but I would suggest you start using another source because someone is feeding you tremendous misinformation. And from a practical standpoint anyone who takes that position and is not work to get their children educated in early age is simply going to put their children in a huge disadvantage to the other kids. And in the academic world, in fact in the world at large I think most people would say that is a truism not even worth the discussion. But maybe even more important, is when those kids that have had a good preschool education get into kindergarten they are so far ahead of the rest of the kids that the other kids feel stupid. Remember these kids only five years old. Their egos are as fragile as egg shells. What's more, and it's not fair, but a zillion studies have shown that the average teacher will dote on the children that they think are the brightest. And kids who come to kindergarten already knowing how to read to some degree their colors their numbers etc., etc. are going to stand out in the kindergarten class. Everyone is insecure to some degree or another and especially children. But this is an insane argument, because a zillion studies have shown the kids who get a good preschool education, say in a Montessori school starting at 2 1/2 simply do better throughout life. And especially in higher education. There's a reason why the rich and the academics get their kids on a waiting list for the best preschools when they're still in the womb, they know the importance of a good preschool education. But believe what you will.
