A question about Japan economy. My thanks in advance for everyone's help. I also want to thank Tom for setting up the thread. It will help to foster better mutual understanding among various business cultures.

I know personally a Japanese professional in the computer field. The person is currently in the midst of a multi-year assignment to the US. I was shocked to find out that the salary was not translated to $US at the beginning of the assignment and the person is still paid in Yen. That led to the shocking realization that the person lost a big percentage in purchasing power in the US because of the decline of Yen vs. $US. But, the most shocking thing of all for me is when the person told me even with the current low in Yen, what could be bought in the US with the salary was still higher than in Japan.

Why is it so? This person is at least as educated as many in the US. The skill set is as good as any's. Why the living standard in Japan has to be lower than that in the US? It seems unjustified.

Opinion of A. Kinmont

Worswick,

in a nutshell: Is he bullish, bearish on Japan? More years of stagnation?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Thomas
