Bill,
We are either serious about fixing the problem or we're not.
To me, the real problem is too many damned regulations.

So what if I want to pay someone $20 to wash my car, for instance? Should I have to ask the guy if he has the legal right to work in the United States of America? Am I really taking jobs away from legal citizens?

Or let's say I hire a nanny. Should I make her prove that she is a legal resident of the US? If I don't, and it turns out that she overstayed a visa, for instance, do you think I should be hauled away in handcuffs?

What is the crime here? Cheating the system? If someone wants to work for me for a given amount of money and/or benefits, who's business is it to say, "No, you can't do that, you're exploiting that person and taking jobs away from legal citizens"?

That's what I'll never get. These damned laws that are meant to protect us from exploitation are instead becoming so unwieldy and so crushing to anyone but the rich and powerful that cheating the system becomes inevitable. And now we want to give these laws sharper teeth?

That's not less government. That's MORE government.
