A couple of problems here. His campaign is saying that when he was told that going to West Point would be free of charge and he thought that meant full scholarship. He was ROTC, remember? How would he have gotten very far without knowing that the service academies were free of charge, except for the little detail of a pledge of service? I certainly knew it, and considered applying at one point. At least at that time, you were nominated by one of your state's Congressmen to the chosen academy. You don't apply directly. Now I have few doubts that if Carson had gone through the process, he wouldn't have had any problems. But his campaigns excuse seems to be ignorant of the details of the service academies.
