A couple of problems here.

Where are the "couple of problems"? I see one. He thought it was a scholarship. Maybe he never intended to go and look further into. I would believe the guy at the dinner table if his name happened to be Gen Westmoreland if he said the schooling would be free.

I don't see a problem with either of those. It is a free ride and people were probably all over him telling he could go to a service academy. Including west point.

If General Westmoreland offered him admission to West Point -- the top ROTC cadet in Detroit, black and perfect grades and board scores -- guess what... he's in.

He certainly could have explained it better, but there is little doubt he was offered admission.
