So Koan- if we all become "convinced" of this, how exactly do you see this playing out in a positive way? There are plenty of mainstream Muslim women who embrace the head scarf. They don't see it as violence against women. I think it's stupid, and I hate it that most of the world's mainstream religions "manage" women's sexuality- because men can't keep it in their pants (so blame the women, and make them the sexual gatekeepers- way to go, religion). But it is really stupid to try to "correct" people of another faith by telling them they're wrong. I don't give a shit about the religious, so I can say what I like, and I do say what I like- but I don't expect any converts, either. I figure people will believe the crazy ass shit they believe regardless of what I say. I just enjoying hearing myself talk, like everyone else on SI- but unlike a lot of the idiots on SI, I never expect to convince anyone, and I'm not interested in "debate" because there isn't any on SI that I've seen. But you seem to be convinced that "liberals" insisting something else will somehow help Muslims. First, all the liberals I know think Muslims are as shit brained crazy as all the other religious folks in the world, and radical, militarized Muslims are as bad as any other militarized crazy fucks. Secondly, I don't see a lot of "excusing". I see a lot of "Don't fuck with the peaceful Muslims, because for the most part, they want peace as much as anyone else." And from all over the world Muslims are denouncing this Paris action (as well as the other actions that happened outside of Paris, but which don't matter as much) - though you kind of have to sift through the dreck in the US print media to find that- but from the Philippines, to the ME, and all across Europe, Muslim leaders are denouncing this, and the other acts of terror committed in the last few days. It only takes a few dozen people to do shit like this- and we'll never stop them all, and still live in the kind of society anyone would want to live in. So we just have to accept, some people in the world are fucked up- and when they feel powerless they'll get a gun, or a bomb, and they'll go kill people. Whether it's little Johnny who got bullied at school for 5 years, or little Osama, who decided the Muslim world wasn't getting the respect it deserved. It's really not rocket science to figure this out. Powerless people seek power over others via the terror of weapons- because they've got nothing else. They don't have mass appeal. They've got crazy fucker appeal- and so they get a critical mass of those, but it's not enough to take over the world. The best defense if to NOT make people feel vulnerable and powerless. Insulting the religion of Muslims and trying to change them from the outside is probably going to have the opposite result- and make at least some Muslims feel under attack. I mean if a red starbucks' cup, and "happy holidays" makes our lame ass Christians feel "attacked"- imagine what Muslims are going to feel like when you attack the tenets of their faith. Understand, I give not a shit about religion, any religion, but I'm practical. And I'd like as much peace as is possible, and I think we should be utilitarian about the way we manage our reactions to things.
