A holiday thought...

For the price of one trade, you can probably feed a dozen people Christmas dinner at your local shelter. For a $100, you can feed 60 homeless. Anyone ever work at a shelter or rehab clinic or halfway house? Ever see the woman and her two small kids whose car finally died and it got too cold to stay in it, the old man whose business folded and he couldn't deal with it and had no one people who cared to help, or the vet who couldn't get a job, took some drugs to forget and finally didn't care anymore.

How much did you spend on your tree this year? How much was the catered party or dress for the company dinner? Did you ever have someone to buy a gift for that had everything...except maybe a donation in their name? How much did you lose and laugh off in a dumb trade this week?

One dinner at the Detroit Rescue Mission cost $1.57, and $5 buys a blanket - do you know what that one meal will mean to someone, what the warmth of the blanket will bring to the kid who ran away from home? Have things ever been so tough for you that you didn't know if anyone cared, or where you would eat, or why you couldn't cry anymore?

I bought a $17 tree tonight, a small one because I live alone and tonight is when I finally got around to it. I stopped at one of the transient lots where everyone was zipping past to get to the malls. there was a young guy there who didn't speak very clearly and walked with a limp. When he tried to cut the base off he lost the saw and it hit me in the face, scratching my glasses and cutting my face slightly. He was upset to where he couldn't talk. I patted his back and told him it wasn't anything to worry about. That everything was ok. The tip was more than the tree. Worst looking tree I ever got. Now I'm going over to help a Chaldean family who owns the local 7-11 - they are moving to their first house tomorrow. On the way back I will get something to wash the eggs some jerks threw on the black couple's front door next to me. They will be back until tomorrow. Funny thing, the twently-something blonde down the street stopped her present-filled Acura to ask why I didn't put up lights or do something special for Christmas.

You know, you can't change the world, but maybe if we do something small every day, we can change our little corner of it. $20 will feed a dozen people. It won't buy your next dinner out, or even pay for a movie and snacks. But it will feed 12 people today.

Merry Christmas to some of you, and for others, May your name be written in the Book of Life in the coming year.
