Thanks for the article Greg. Beyond the usual sub-zero effects
on margins, the article adds more confirmation to what I've
been seeing regarding Dell's pricing.

I've been doing a lot of comparison to other brands, feature
for feature, on-line offerings and in retail stores, and for
the latest feature sets, Dell's pricing is very difficult
to beat. Except for Compaq... there's no way Dell can beat
Compaq on pricing now with BTO, CTO and CCP... never.

It also helps confirm my suspicions that Dell has quietly been
targeting Gateway.

Unfortunately for Dell, most consumers are more comfortable
buying hands-on, cash and carry instant gratification. So what
if it's a few bucks more retail.

This is why Dell will be making a significant promotional push
in the form of worldwide television advertising throughout 1998.
You might even see a Dell ad during a Sienfeld episode.

And finally, my latest statistacally insignificant field
research mission to CompUSA.

All the PentiumII high end Presarios are out-of-stock. There
were many boxes of the 2200 (the $799 model) and the
$999 model.

Similar patterns for other high-end products... out of the good
stuff. There seemed to be no shortage of low cost stuff,
from printers to monitors to scanners.

This may just be Austin and other tech towns who typically have
an appetite for technology. Might be a very different scene in Nebraska or Wisconsin.

And for the awards... coolest looking notebook: Compaq
Coolest looking DT chassis design: HP
Best monitor resolution/color/clarity.... Sony, hands-down.
Butt ugliest systems: Tie between Packard Bell and CompUSA
Most ingnored systems by patrons: Apple
Coolest game graphics: Forget it. I've seen the future
and nothing compares to what will be available next year for
AGP 2X mode enabled PC's.
