Sometimes the critique of Oracle's prospects takes the form of
'Oracle is spending too much money on network computing and not
enough on the Internet'. Seems to miss the mark. My sense is
that Oracle is spending far more on network computing in the form
of HTML/Java/CORBA support than on the network computer design itself.
I also believe that arguments of the form 'the network computer idea
is stillborn' are mistaken in that they ignore the proliferation
of low cost networked devices. In its most general version, the
Oracle (and Sun and IBM) idea is that HTML/Java/CORBA + penetration
of the tv/phone/terminal/kiosk + digital identity will encourage
proliferation of ubiquitous high bandwidth and large server
infrastructure. The world seems to be headed in just that direction.
Whether NCI does well or not selling its designs is not nearly
as significant as the sea change in our computing/communicating/
entertaining environment, which Oracle is encouraging and trying
to take advantage of. I think the real questions revolve around
execution, not strategy, on which "Reasonable men differ...", and
the timing relative to changes in Oracle's traditional bases.

This guy (Daniel Rimer) is a Senior Internet Research analyst at H&Q????? And a co-chair of H&Qs internet conference??

Glad I decided on Bear Stearns for my capital acct then.

There are a number of obvious omissions/errors in his piece but let me just focus on this seemingly trivial comment,

Many of us are now familiar with the success stories:
Dell (DELL) taking in over $2 million per day;


Dell does in excess of 3MM per day. 2MM was last year. And I have to say, that this 3MM figure is so hyped up in the e-commerce industry that it feels to me like *everybody* knows it. Dell has used it in their print campaigns, and in investor literature, etc. So to prove my point, I looked it up on news.com to see if there were any recent articles quoting this 3MM figure... and yup! there was one, dated (surprise) just yesterday (and another one on Dec 11, Dec 2, etc.)...
