Is there a practical and economical way today to buy a Sun system and get the word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and browser software for it, for the home market, at a price of $3000 or less?

Solaris runs on standard PCs which cost less than $600 in some cases. Sun is also developing Java-based devices and a low-cost Java workstation. In the spring, IBM will be releasing eSuite office-pack for Java at a cost of $49 each. Paying $49 for wordprocessing, spreadsheet and personal communicator is certainly within the reach of most users. Once software availability reaches critical mass, Java will be used anywhere Windows is used today. The latest Java developer count was one million although Microsoft would probably argue 800,000 Java developers.
