That school was what the government full of religious cranks provided. It was run by totalitarian thugs. Obey or else. Caning. Assembly included compulsory praying, compulsory hymn singing, with authoritarian thugs watching out for any defiance. Much the same as the sardine can Moslems all kneel to Mecca, or else. Apostasy is death with that lot! They don't mess about with mere beatings with sticks. Education in NZ was supposed to be secular but it was not. Even now, parliament begins with a prayer. In court one had to swear on a Bible to "tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me Dog" which is richly amusing as that's a lie itself just to placate dumb authoritarian religious cranks. <Atheists like you want to circumscribe the lives of people like me.
