Hi Rod; re >Microsoft bloatware < good term..I have found cpu speed is not the most importent thing thanks to the way win95 manages memory..real RAM and lots of it..gets around the the win386.swp to hard disk..which is the main killer of speed, 64meg mem and a fast vidio card , can make a 486 out produce in real useable terms, than a Pentium can with say only 16meg of mem. The bench mark of how fast a cpu is means little in applications running win95, if she is writing/reading the HD with virtual mem, to satisfy her hunger. I'm now running a cyrix 686 (200) and it smokes..but I put 3 times the mem most off the shelf boxes come with..and up graded the vidio card.. There is also a shareware program out that grabs things you assign to it, like the windows TEMP file, and Netscape disk cache, and routes them all to RAM if you got it..it's made a differance too..heck my hard drive seldom has to work now..all that access time is saved..VRAM107.ZIP if you can find it. Agine it defeats the win .swp file..and most disk caches redirecting them to RAM, Untill your ram fills up..then it will go to disk itself, but there is little benifit of having it with anything less than 32 meg ram.. Jim Ps Modem wise any clone with a "rockwell chip" in it beats USRX hands down.. republic.net

Rod: I have seen some 166 MHz systems for $799.00 which is probably plenty for a lot of people but may not be enough a year from now.A good screwdriver shop here has a 233MHz MMX with 32 Megs Ram, 24X cd rom, 3.1 hd ETC FOR $1099 without Monitor which is below Comp USA etc and a lot of people listen to the Salesman.There can even be a problem with VIDEO cards now as they make Games for Video cards for the Virge S3 and another type and some games will play on a System with the Virge 3 but the same game wont play on the other Card.I believe Quake 2 makes two versions.And you are correct that at some point good enough is good enough. I was just stating that I know many including myself who started out green and wanted to upgrade later and found out that in many instances it was not that cut and dried.Manufacturers who make "crippled" products either because they left something out or because it is proprietary do the Consumer a disservice.How would you like it if someone made a program that worked on everything but the K6?
