Al, No...thinking that a mythical God is involved in random acts of natural origin suppresses critical thinking in other, more important topics. I don't see how dismissing one's survival as a product of "random chance" involves critical thinking. Any moron can just say, "Oh, you just got lucky." Where's the meaning in that? It's natural for the survivors of near-death experiences to attribute their good fortune to a higher purpose. It's a reflection of how much they (and we) value such a fragile thing as our own lives. It's also a reflection of humanity's desire to find meaning in life. What's so amusing about that? Where would all of that fit in to your "world of random chance"? Personally, I find it more amusing that those who don't believe in a higher power and think that everything is just due to "random chance" are all too quick to call out "karma" whenever it suits them.
