How is refusing to bring it to the floor advising? Oh, right. Make up new definitions when you need to. The ends justify the means for you, I suppose.

He was rejected for his stance on civil rights. Now that might just be a personal opinion to you, but it is and was an important issue to the country. He even supported poll taxes! He was "borked" by his own petard, as it were.

His role in supporting Nixon in the "Saturday Night Massacre" didn't help his case. Admitting that Nixon offered him a seat on the Supreme Court if he played ball in Nixon's attempts to avoid prosecution for Watergate was sort of unseemly. A judge who is open to bribery doesn't seem to be the best choice, so it seems like it was for the best.
