Come on, how cold do you have to be to tell him he's wrong, and that there is nothing else but "random chance"? What comfort do you find in that? The notion that somehow, you are more "rational" than that guy? Ten I get the utility here...but it's a response brought on by his extreme mental state. Understandable in the same way as people who turn to faith to escape a life of other types of extremes, like drug use, or crime or abuse...they need something and faith in God provides it.
