Hi Clinton,

I agree, those high speed racers in the hands of unskilled and wreckless owners is frightening. Sailing is my speed. There's no hurry about getting to your destination, just being on the boat and handling the sails and the wind is the destination itself.

Happy boating.

Bill, sorry for being off topic.

OFF TOPIC

Agreed 100% on the dangers of cigarette boats. There is nothing inherently wrong with the boats -- unfortunately, they just seem to attract a certain type of driver. If you think maintenance on your boat is bad, you should see the fuel costs on one of those Scarabs. I had friends swear to me that they can see the fuel gauge needle move when they hit the throttle. I would hate to spend all that time refueling, all that money on gas, and to see myself leaving a stinky trail of rainbow-colored petroleum waste wherever I go. I guess I like Scarabs cause I have a juvenile liking for fast things. None of that macho engines-roaring crap, just the pure feeling of speed. And I think of the ocean as a very formidable force. Wouldn't want to be out there in a puttering 12-foot Wellcraft when a storm comes.

If one is responsible about safe driving, staying sober, and not using tremendous amounts of fuel, there's nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun on the open waters. Unfortunately, responsible folks are hard to come by at the controls of a speedboat. It is most often the speedboat drivers that one sees blatantly disregarding the no-wake zones, drinking a beer and/or smoking a joint while driving, breaking right of way, etc.

One of the more interesting sights, BTW, is the US Customs and INS agents who get to drive confiscated drug-dealer cigarette boats (just the usual neon-color Scarab with a Fed agency logo hastily painted on). Looks like they quite enjoy their line of work.

As for the cold front... I always liked the winter in FtL, especially when it got "cold." Nice break from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Lastly. You told me your pet peeve, here's mine: the 51% of Floridians who say Intercoastal, when its actual name is Intracoastal. :-)

Good sailing and good trading to you.
