<IBM Bullish On Network Computers for 1998; Customers Cite Fast Performance, Easy Administration, Low Costs>

NCs are in reality PCs without local storage.
Big stake for IBM for the installed base of 3270 terminals
replacement mkt. Note that almost all the companies profiled
used AS400 or some IBM mainframes.
No doubt NCs have a place in the computing world; that is
when the usage and applications warrant no loal storage.
Cost reduction is more of a hype as NCs are so new that
nobody has actual cost data yet; e.g. cost of configuring
the network for all the NCs, loss of productivity when the
cable is broken or the server is down; what happened when
one needs to download some data from a CD and the server is
down in the basement (there goes 15 min of productivity);
what happened when 1000 users start their NCs in the morning
at the same time and takes 10 min to come up with your MS-Word
and there goes 10 x 1000 min productivity; and there are more.
