George, while Christmas sales have been a disappoint thus far, I think the jury will still be out until after January. It is my understanding that a very significant amount of the Christmas purchasing has been done in the form of gift certificates and these cannot be booked as "sales" until a purchase is made. Consumers are becoming sophisticated and wise to the retail cycle and are taking advantage. Just my 2 cents. bp

cpq tracks store sales with great systems.
reserves will be made to make sure 4q97 is fair with follow through promotions that might be needed next qtr.
I would guss that cpq sales were per plan or ahead of plan.
I haven't seen allot of ads that are excessively trying to dump cpq's.
ads are the key.

Jorge. Re: "Christmas sales for many retailers was a disappointment this year..." Everything I have read or heard has been positive for computers. (Maybe the softness at Sears et al is because more of the family budget for gifts went to computers).

The stores that did poorly were department stores and apparel. Discounters like Wal-Mart did well and upscale stores like Tiffany did well.

Net Net, I would not extrapolate weaknesses in some areas for weaknesses in technology.
