No... it started with paying for what you use and not requiring OTHERS via the government to subsidize your way of life. (or mine or anyone's)
We should be discussing less taxes not more taxes.

But then I know this all started as a trial balloon on taxing booze.
I just picked something that you use that you are getting a free ride from the 30% of us in the country who don't consume ANY alcohol yet we are sick and tired of paying for how it is abused by most who use it at least once in their lives if not more often. (Don't tell me you never drove buzzed as a kid....)

Alcohol:
  • destroys families
  • destroys livers and the health of heavy users
  • destroys the ability of the police departments to solve property crimes when they spend so much time on domestic violence fueled by alcohol. (Pot doesn't have that issue... pot heads are usually very mellow...)
  • Kills many of us while driving via DUI drivers
  • etc.
but the users don't pay for these costs that experts estimate run $2 per drink.
The math is simple.... one in ten who use alcohol have a major problem with it to the point it costs society.

Anyway, saying you don't want to subsidize health care is little different than me saying I don't want to subsidize anyone who drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes, meth, crack, etc.... Pay for what you use and the damage it does to society (or the costs of the actions of the users) .

BTW, we once discussed having Crissy Field windsurfers and now kiteboarders pay a fee each year to cover the taxpayers cost to have Coast Guard rescues under the Golden Gate Bridge when the wind dies of they get in trouble with bone breaking landings. It turns out the events are not that common and they say it is good training for "real emergencies".... sort of like they need to "exercise their muscles" so to speak.
