As far as DOW... Yeah, it doesn't trade as steadily as SPX. A couple of years back I read a study by some quant trader on Seeking Alpha. The guy tried different exit signals for management of a stock portfolio. It turned out that following the "general" stop for SPX gave better results than maintaining individual stops on each stock. (As I recall, the signal was related to 50 dma crossing the 200).

Such a thing would not work with INDU.

There are periods when INDU outperforms SPX - in fact, I'm thinking of using DIA, during such periods, in lieu of SPY. But - the stop for DIA would have to be based on signals for SPY.
