Gambler,
Most traders and fund managers probably still on vacation, these
are the entities that buy huge blocks of AMAT and make the real
volatility. Small block traders (independent investors) are waiting
for a momentum move before committing more money to semi-
equipment sector stocks. Should start seeing some analyst upgrades
in mid/late January with buy ratings, the equip stocks will move
then.

There was a report that Japanese chip makers MAY cut production and capital spending for the fiscal year beginning April. (Source: TheStreet.com) 16% of AMAT sales are in Japan.
