Buck, this uptick in semi stocks that you are expecting in early 1998...what is your reason...or is it just a "feeling"??

BB,

I agree with your assertion that we will probably see a bounce early in '98. God knows we're due. But in regards to "should
see a good bounce when semi equip stocks come back into favor again.
" This is largely the question of the hour-when will these stocks come back into favor. It would take several pieces of + news to propel this sector to the forefront again so soon IMO. This we are unlikely to see, also IMHO. At this point, I would merely like AMAT to meet their #'s come Feb. Although I do think the Asian contagion's effect on this group was OVERDONE in a large way, there is still fear out there when it comes to any investment having any connection with Korea. Until this fear dissipates somewhat, IMO we will not see many Strong Buys for AMAT. This being said, I am more Bullish on AMAT than ever and would not be surprised if we hit new highs by summer. This of course assumes that the panic stricken MM's get some Ba**s and start investing, not merely throwing $ at KO or G simply because they are not AMAT. Too many lemmings and not enough investors at this point.

regards,

Brian

NVLS seemed to manage a price 30-50% above AMAT this past year in spite of the $80M settlement for patent infringement.

NVLS EPS for the last four quarters is 46% higher than AMAT, so that would be about right. Of course, AMAT total earnings probably dwarf that of NVLS, so it is purely an artifact of the number of shares outstanding.
