>>My new Jaz drive. Maybe I need a sonic tea-cosy. Any suggestions? Is it a dud?<<

No. It isn't a dud. This is what Jaz owners have to come to expect from their decision.

On the other hand, the new SyQuest SparQ is just $199 for the same capacity as the now brutally overpriced Jaz. And get this-- the SparQ 1 Gig cartridge costs just $33 apiece in a 3-pack. 4 Gigabytes for $300. Hardware included.

Let's see Iomega top that.

Hi Eve,

I bought my Jaz about 18 months ago. Yes it spins down after a settable idle period and has to respin-up when accessed. But mine makes no discernable noise after it has spun up or if there is no cartridge in it. Give Iomega a call.

Jeff

>>My new Jaz drive<<

Eve -

The Jaz drives I know do make some noise when they spin up or down, but nothing untoward. And certainly nothing continuous and annoying. While owners of SparQ drives apparently have no choice but to put up with strange noises, I suspect you have gotten a dud Jaz there. I suggest that you return it from whence it came. You should be able to exchange it for a new one.
