Portable External Storage Devices: Experiences and Opinions differ ...

<< "I hate WD Passport external drives. ... their 2.5 externals suck." ...

======================================
Disclosure: In this century I've never lost an internal or external HDD (knock on wood because I could lose one tomorrow as it is the nature of electromechanical devices). I backup regularly to secondary internal WD or Seagate 3.5" SATA drives on my DPE andalso to external desktop or portables. I currently have 3 available older 3.5" AC powered desktop externals: a 7 year old 500GB Iomega with power switch and (2) 5 year old 1.5 TB Seagate GoFlexs without. My 3 newest externals are all 2.5" USB 2.0/3.0 powered portables manufactured by Western Digital: 2 are WD branded My Passport Ultras (6th and 7th gen) and the newest is an HGST branded Touro manufactured by Western Digital in China that was ordered on Saturday afternoon and just arrived Monday ...

======================================

So far the Touro S which spins at 7200 RPM is impressive. I'm backing up using licensed EaseUS 9.1 on a relatively new Win 10 Dell and the backups and recoverys are definitely faster than those using the 6th and 7th gen My Passport Ultras (as they should be).

Cheers, - Eric L. -

Counterpoint: Ancient and Repetitive history (over 20 posts dating back to 2011).

<< " I take great care handling these drives " >>

Respectfully ... that's questionable baaed on your posts to this board, Ron. It is, however, unfortunate you had a problem with your original WD external drive purchased 6 years ago in 2011 that you then abused by 1st running upside down (a total no-no) then further abused by removing the rubber feet that are there for a non-decorative purpose before receiving a warranty replacement ...

Message 27548446 ... Message 27550429 ... Message 28328935

... and the also obsolete 1 gen newer model built in 2012 (the 'Brand New' WD Passport' you took a sledge to a few years back for our viewing pleasure. One wonders if the devices You attached to certified the failed product rather then the competitive model they themselves manufacture and Seagates.

My own WD externals USB 2/3.0 1TB WD portables are 6th and 7th gen Passport Ultras not the obsolete 4th and 5th gen non-Ultra models you used and they have been exceptionally reliable. I would not hesitate to recommend them (and often have). I also currently use 2 newer 3GB WD Ultra book desktop externals and they as well as my WD Touro have all been rock solid.

<< The external ones are junk. HGST are good and Toshiba. >>

The recent gen WD Passport externals are most definitely not junk and neither are the newest 7200 RPM WD Touros. There is a reason why the 12 year old Passport line is the single most widely deployed external USB portable drive and sports exceptionally high user satisfaction.

The $59 USD WD 1TB Blue USB 3.0 My Passport Portable External Hard Drive (WDBYNN0010BBL-WESN) purchased by Vireya is the newest gen Passport. The range (1TB to 4TB) sports a 4.5 of 5 star Amazon user satisfaction rating of 1,292 reviews. I suspect he'll be quite satisfied with it.

Those that would like to review your posts to this board bashing WD Passports can use advanced search, your name, this board and 'passport' ...
