People do not vote for new taxes as a rule, because they live in a fantasy world i.e. they want government services, but they do not want to pay for them. Most people have no idea what the actual cost of the social services they want is e.g. emergency medical services, police, fire, water, sewer, and roads, etc.

They want to cut taxes until they need an ambulance and EMT, then they want to know why it is s slow or not available.

The massive waste in government is a myth perpetuated by the rich who do not want to pay them and have enough money to go it alone, or so they think. . I did state budgets for 20 years. I know what basic social services cost. Government is under funded not over funded, if one wants to live in a healthy society, instead of a dog eat dog world.

So because too many people don't give enough thought to those who are not as well-off as they are, or social costs, the easiest target to balance the budget is always the poor. They have no lobbyists. Wall street has 10 lobbyists for every congress person. And the rich always have friends in the legislature.

It is like people not understanding probability. The fear of terrorists is irrational. One is about 10,000+ times as likely to die in a car than by a terrorist.

That permanent fund check in October is so important to the poor in Alaska. It comes just at the right time for them to buy heating oil for the winter, pay bills and buy Christmas presents for the kids.

A healthy society must have empathy. Dick would agree :)>. He worked for me once when I ran the states alcohol and drug abuse program.
