Donald Trump is the Bernie Madoff of politics

A presidential campaign of false promises and illusions

Like Madoff, Trump is running a scheme based on promises he can’t keep — such as mass deportations of more than 10 million undocumented immigrants, a ban on Muslim immigrants to the U.S., and the return of manufacturing jobs to the U.S.

Trump has presented the illusion of a presidential campaign, with all its outward trappings, from press conferences with the candidate standing in front of American flags to a campaign plane with the candidate’s name emblazoned on the fuselage.

But there is nothing of substance there, as even some other Republicans have acknowledged. Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell conceded last month that “ it’s pretty obvious doesn’t know a lot about the issues.”

McConnell is putting it mildly. When Trump was asked about the nuclear triad — our country’s land, sea, and air-based systems for launching nuclear strikes — it was clear he had “absolutely no idea” what was being asked.

And when a Republican member of Congress asked Trump if he would defend Article I of the Constitution, which addresses legislative powers, it was equally obvious the candidate had no grasp of the basics of the nation’s founding document — he promised to defend Articles I, II, and even Article XII..

As the Constitution itself contains just seven articles that precede the 27 amendments, another Republican legislator said Trump’s response “gave him a little pause” and pointed to concerns that “there wasn’t a lot of substance” to the candidate.

Moreover, a few weeks before the important Brexit vote in Britain, Trump didn’t even know what the term referred to. Matt Yglesias of Vox, meanwhile, asked voters to picture a President Donald Trump dealing with the recent coup attempt in Turkey, observing that it was hard to believe Trump had any grasp of the situation.

Trump’s remarks the next day confirmed this suspicion. He said of the crisis: “So many friends in Turkey. Great people, amazing people. We wish them well. A lot of anguish last night, but hopefully it will all work out.”

As Michael Wolff observed for the Hollywood Reporter: “If there’s any pattern to Trump’s conversation, it’s that he’s vague on all subjects outside himself, his campaign, and the media. Everything else is mere distraction.”

Like Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, it is possible that Trump’s campaign will collapse under its own weight. Journalists who tried to identify operations for the Trump campaign in 50 states found that many listed contact telephone numbers didn’t work, some offices had no websites or numbers listed at all, and just six offices actually answered phone calls.

Of those six, several explained that physical offices had not been opened yet. Trump has had serious difficulties managing this week's Republican convention, which featured his wife reciting a partially plagiarized speech, unruly delegates, and Senator Ted Cruz embarrassing the nominee by refusing to endorse him in his closely watched speech.

As the campaign enters the home stretch, though, the Republican Party will likely circle the wagons. Even Marco Rubio himself, who rightly called Trump a con man, now supports Trump.

That’s unfortunate, to say the least. Those who recognize the danger Trump poses have an obligation to speak out as Trump, the Madoff of American politics, stands ready to make off with America’s soul.
