<tell us what Texas has other than a fair shot at some sunshine??> Hmmmm, I had to think about that a bit. I'd have to say just about everything except mountains for snow skiing (Ski Lubbock IS a joke): -Rich pine forests in the east -Pretty [if a bit scruffy] hill country down around Austin (which is a great town...lived there for some years) -Coastline (though the Gulf Coast lacks the drama of the ocean coasts) -Great dining, entertainment and cultural offerings in the cities (particularly here in Dallas/Fort Worth, in the Austin/San Antonio corridor and down Lawrence's way in Houston) -Used to have an NFL powerhouse (though we never knew how to enjoy it...1st Cowboy Super Bowl parade in the 90s turned into a near riot, security was so tight for the 2nd that nobody participated, everybody was tired of it all by the 3rd) -A national heritage...yes, the only state that was a republic (emphasis on the WAS, a distinction those wild-eyed separationists out in the Davis Mountains can't seem to make) -And, oh yeah, *interesting* weather. It's nice right now when much of the country is freezing. But it does get hotter 'n' you know what in the summer and, D/FW is in what's colorfully called "Tornado Alley" (saw a twister last spring just over the state line in Oklahoma when we were driving back from visiting relatives in Kansas). Probably should ask David U. about hurricanes, too. -BIG country in West Texas...or, as one wag said, "miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles." Scrapps, I probably haven't convinced you to GTT [GTT was carved into the sides of barns and on fence posts in places abandoned by people looking for a better life - GTT means Gone to Texas]. But, hey, come on down, kick your shoes off, sit a spell. Or, as Lyle Lovett sings, "That's right, you're not from Texas, but Texas loves you anyway." Happy New Year y'all.
