Yes, you'll find that Dell does not allow you to configure
a low end system... nor have they designed an offering to compete
in the low end space.

You'll find however that when you compare systems with "like"
hardware between Dell and anybody... Dell clearly has some of,
if not the lowest advertised prices around. I've been
doing lots of verifiable price comparisons for research
on the "Dell has lost it's pricing edge issue" and am finding
that Dell's prices on midrange on up systems actually beat
some of the no name clone offerings like UMAX, MicroFlex,
Quantex, ProGen.

Check this out... Dell cheaper than CompUSA's offerings????

Intel 200Mhz with 512k L2 cache
4.3GB HD
32MB memory
2MB PCI video
CDROM
17" monitor
56k modem
Sound/speakers/software buldle

CompUSA = $1800 Dell Dimension = $1839

Intel PentiumII 300Mhz
4.3GB HD
64MB memory
4MB video
CDROM
17" monitor
56k modem
Sound/speakers/software buldle

CompUSA = $2793 Dell = $2640

And with this system, Dell has the advantage of AGP video
and a Sony tube where CompUSA doesn't.

If you were going to plunk down over $2500, who would
you trust? You'll find that for high end systems, Dell
has a great pricing advantage... Compare Dell's Workstation
to Micron's workstation pricing... for the same hardware,
Dell is several hundred less.

I think all the hoopla surrounding the sub-zero and Dell's
avoidance of it has generated a media fed perception that
Dell has lost it's price competiveness when in fact, it
still has a strong pricing advantage.
