Jim, IBM has the leading technology in the disk drive area. IBM often gets royalties when leading edge drives ship from other manufacturers. IBM's patents and manufacturing expertise also allow Big Blue to ship drives most other manufacturers can't. Scott

Jim, the disk drive industry is in the dumps because IBM is kicking their butt. IBM has been shipping MR heads for years, and is now shipping GMR heads. The result is everybody else has been pushed down the value chain, and IBM has been raking in money at the high end, and OEMing their MR heads out to the Quantum's of the world.

I expect Chairman Gerstner will once again note in his overview that storage performed well in 4Q97, as he has done the past three quarters. Until then, we are each entitled to our theories.
