In my earlier posting, I was comparing the price differential between the price of the minimally configured Compaq amd Dell machines as ordered over the Internet. As stated, there was a substantial price differential of at least $500. I was not comparing the Dell machine to any computer purchase at CompUSA. Many are buying the minimally configured machine for use on the Internet. Perhaps, this is why minimally configured machines may have been 40% of recent sales as reported in the Wall Street Jouurnal on Wednesday..

"The CompUSA A200 system you quote is $1299. It is
NOT A PENTIUM II 233 but a pentium 200Mhz socket
7 with no L2 chache"

You got all of that from a 30 second comercial. Man no wonder it is taking me so long to catch on.
I just say the 233 II and the $1,299 price tag.

Did you really see the comercial that I saw about an hour or so ago ?

Could this be a new offering from CPU because of the INTC price cuts ?

Could this machine be competition for Dell ?
I know, nothing can compete with the almighty DELL ;)

"...You can't configure a Dell down to a level that has 16MB of memory, 3.2GB HD, NO L2 cahce no AGP.... the list goes on.. .."

Does this mean that CPU can make machins that DELL can't make ?
Wow, I would think this would be simple for the almighty.

Jim

Meathead and All,

Re: Refining the CompUSA comparisons with DELL

The comparisons need to have similar warranty plans.
I have made the comparisons more accurate by making sure the options are the same where the choice is given and by making the warranty policy the same from the options lists.

I configured a Pentium II 300 MHZ Minitower with

64MB SDRAM
4.3GB EIDE HD
Low cost 17 " monitor
4MB nVidia AGP card
14/32 EIDE CD-ROM
MS Office
AWE64 Sound card
Altec Lansing ACS90 speakers
Us Robotics 56K Modem

3 year on-site next day warranty service

The DELL price was $2,487.
The CompUSA price was 2884.65

The percentage difference is 16% advantage to DELL.

I guess you get what you pay for if you are careful!

Regards,

Jim Kelley
