Paul; It is cheaper to include the modem internally, they could go DSP upgradeable. The external modem is always a premium to the internal, and if this was cheap box they should have left the ethernet out and put a modem in.
That it why I conclude this was a net PC gradeoff, with local storage, being sold semi surplus. A true under $1 K system would have a modem and no ethernet card.
The ISB std is not yet stable enough to use for this AP.
It is true the modem can use the external port though.
