Gene - Excellent and well thought out commentary.

The only thing I would like to add is that 1997 was a year of transition for Intel from Pentium to PentiumII. During transitions Intel competitors typically gain market share and profitability for Intel goes down. The new generation product when introduced costs more to manufacture and only has slightly more performance than the previous generation. This was true with the Pentium and Pentium II as it was true when the Pentium was introduced at 66 mhz and the 100 mhz 486 was available.

1998 should see Intel with Pentium II from top to bottom. I believe Intel's low end will be a PII at 266mhz. I can not see how AMD will compete except on price 1998.

With respect to comment on downgrades this is actually good for the stock. Now it is a lot easier for Intel to meet and exceed the earnings expectations.

regards,
John H

Gene: I saw an article somewhere the other day saying Compaq is coming out with a PC for less than $700.00 with Pentium chips. What will that do AMD&Cyrix chips. I guess the only reason people are buying AMD/Cyrix Pcs are mainly because of the price (?),but given a choice, wouldn't the customer prefer a Pentium PC.Now with prices at these levels, why would any one consider anything but a Pentium? Any thoughts Gene or anyone?
