Dwight,

The budget surplus? PAY DOWN THE DEBT! No question in my mind that that is the right thing to do. We need a debt load so that the Fed can conduct monetary policy; however, a healthy level is more like 1 trillion dollars, not the current 5 trillion. With our heavy load, interest on the debt is the single largest expenditure. Unfortunately, those [insert your favorite expletives] in Washington are most likely going to spend it on something for short term political gain.

Also, it hasn't been made real clear whether they are talking about a surplus for FY 1998, or merely the 12 months preceding 1 Jan 1998, which was the first thing I heard.

It is not uncommon for people to thing I work FOR the feds; specifically, I work WITH the feds, DOE in fact. I am referred to as a government scientist, though. Most of the scientists at FNAL are paid by entities other than DOE or URA. We gather on the Illinois prairie because one can't walk down to the local Radio Shack and purchase a high energy proton-antiproton collider:-) Sort of an overhead sharing arrangement. We can discuss the finer points over a few cold ones when I get back into town (and find some free time :-)

In any case, back to NTN.

Heavy volume again today and upward movement to 1.125. Nice to know that what we expect would happen appears to be happening.

Cheers,

Rich
