We don't know whether Socrates was literate or illiterate, because we have no writings of his. What we do know, is that Socrates was Plato's teacher. So if Plato thought he was smart, he was probably smart as helll -lol. And there was no one smarter than Plato.

Plato figured out 2500 years ago that we all live in an illusionary world. Science has since confirmed that! 2,500 hundred years ago he figured that out!

I cut my teeth on the Republic by Plato and especially the chapter on the allegory of the cave. That one book is not only what motivated me to quit my factory job as a pick up boy in a paper bag factory in Emeryville California, and enter-college; that one book at the age 24 motivated me to lie down on a couch for two years and read all the smartest people in the world I could think of.

I knew there was a larger reality out there and I did not know what it was. I intended to find out.

I realized how ignorant I was and that I had no idea really what Plato was talking about. For two years I spent every afternoon in San Jose California reading the giants of the world lying on a big white couch and listenting to Country Joe and the Fish-lol.

I was so ignorant I had no idea where to even start. I started with the classical authors in this country like Steinbeck and Hemingway, but found nothing. They were just stories. Great stories, but no big insights.

Then I jumped the Atlantic Ocean to the European existentialists and I found a home. Over a four-year time period , I went from an ignorant pick up boy in a paper bag factory to finding out I was an existentialist.

That was a pretty heavy trip-lol.

Socrates was illiterate. That is not a criticism it is a fact. He was the most important heathen philosopher of all time - that is not a criticism it is fact.

You have never read Plato or Aristotle and have no understanding of Greek philosophy, politics or religion. That is a criticism and a fact.
