The "end corrupt government" message is really starting to resonate. Led by the out of control premiums on Obamacare.
It ain't over. Trump has moved into the passing lane, dude.

Here is a prime example of how stupid you are.

You wrote, "What worries me the most, is that I have read accounts by statisticians that say if we do not get rid of all nuclear weapons we will use them sooner than later.
I know that statisticians can predict things like that with great accuracy. I wish everybody understood that."

The simple and well documented fact is that you can prove anything with statistics.

I can prove anything with statistics, except the truth. George Canning

As Mark Twain said, "There are lies, there are damn lies, and there are statistics."

Yes you can prove anything with statistics. Statistics have to be correctly interpreted if they are to be of value. The problem is that most people are not trained in the interpretation of statistics so they tend to believe what is placed before them without realizing that statistics can be made to say anything.

Easy enough.

Revive Project Orion. Convert the nuclear weapons to Pulsed Propulsion Units. Each launch uses 300 PPUs. Use Shuttle Reusable Boosters to loft each spaceship above the bulk of the air, say 200km. Since it is going to orbit, the craft would almost be on one side, so the nuclear material will be going faster than escape velocity and shoot into space. And go big, 100k tons or more per launch.

So what would we launch? Everything we need for a few decades. Entire lunar colonies. Lunar mining equipment. Nuclear reactors, safed so they could be stored in orbit for long periods of time. Entire space stations for the Earth. The Moon. Mars. Project Timberwolf nuclear thermal rockets for the Earth-Moon circuit and Earth-Mars circuit tuned to run on lunar water. Storage stations for lunar water and lunar methane around Earth. Solar powered satellites.

In short, everything we need for a couple of decades stored in orbit for later use. With a mine on the Moon for water and the tugs to move it to and from Earth orbit, all we need to do is get people from the surface to LEO. Once there, they can go anywhere in the Solar System.

So giving up nukes could give us the Solar System pretty cheaply. Seems like a no-brainer.

koan, we're going to have to agree to disagree on that.

Back then the Russians always played the percentages before they made any moves and the percentages didn't look very good to them and Weren't very good for them. I think it was a good move by Kennedy not to bomb Cuba.
But I don't think that was the main factor in keeping us out of a war at that time.

I think EVERYBODY would be happier if there weren't ANY nuclear weapons except for the countries that already have them.

What's Israel without nukes? A very small easily hit target for Iran without any deterrence to that attack.

What's Russia without nukes? A 3rd world country without any leverage.

What's Pakistan without nukes? A new neighborhood for India to move into.

I think Nukes eventually WILL be used. I just want to see myself and my Family get to live out their lives before that happens.

I think Trump NOT becoming President could be beneficial to that outcome.

People worry too much about nuclear weapons. You should be more worried about getting t-boned at an intersection. The bogey-man of nuclear weapons is a myth designed to keep people scared and crooks in power. I'm more scared of that new religion called Global Warming that is scaring children all over the world. I'm way more scared of a crazy white broad that thinks she is an Indian and is going to give a Tomahawk Chop to Wall Street. Have you people no shame?
