Right.

You do realize that MAD is unchanged? If Putin decides to launch, we will respond? Dead is dead. Putin is a lot of things, but crazy he isn't.

Just like he won't really engage in a ground war in Europe. He couldn't win such a thing. He knows it. He is hoping to scare off opposition to his bombing of civilians in Syria by bluffing with everything he has. That includes the nukes. But he won't use them.

The Soviet Union was a credible threat. Russia isn't. Now it acts like it is, but the reality is that it has a small economy and couldn't not win a war of any length. Its entire economy is smaller than the state of Texas. +/- depending on the exchange rate. It has some nice weapons, at least on paper, but the fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter when they can only field maybe a dozen of one system or a half a dozen of another. Even if the Armata tank lived up to the RT hype, they have only fielded a handful. Put them up against the thousands of Abrams tanks we and NATO has, well...

Sure, Russia has nukes. But to win that, they'd have to do some sort of sneak attack and take out all of the West, including the submarines and bombers with the initial launch.

Not going to happen. I suppose he could attempt to hold the world hostage, but that will only work until we, and by we I mean all of the industrialized world, figure out a way to neutralize the threat.
