Hi Patrick:

A colon is used when one wants to draw attention to that which follows, for example, a list of things. It is also used in formal correspondence. (Dear Mr. Smith:) It can be used in certain mathematical expressions too, but let's stick with words here.

Since I am using your first name to start this response, I probably should have used a comma rather than the colon. Any other ideas on this anyone?

The semicolon business is a little more complicated. Let me know if you want my thoughts on this. I say thoughts, because all my responses are just that. I have no special qualifications in this field -- just interest.
