<Is this purely for multi-processor boxes, or does it offer any benefit in a single processor configuration?>

Well despite your claims, the PII outperforms both the K6 and The cyrix when running 32bit code on a 32bit operating system. For floating point the gap is even wider. How much of this is due to the bus protocal? Can't say for sure. Depends on the applications being run and the IO activity. As you probably know, socket7 locks the bus during each IO, something the P6 doesn't do. No IO cycles can be overlaped. The P6 overcomes this weakness so it depends on how much IO takes place. Expect AGP to further complicate the issue.
The GTL+ buffers will scale to higher frequencies much easier regardless of the number of processors.
