Hurtin' workin' stiffs are hurtin' mainly because their jobs have gone to Asia. What does this have to do with Democrats? It is the result of decisions made by billionaires - people like Trump.

The (D)'s got too cuddly with the elites, and got Trumped. They need to get back with the FDR voters, the workin' stiffs. That's who Trump played to, and won. Sure, some racism, misogyny and xenophobia was involved, but they didn't elect him. Hurtin' workin' stiffs did. Trump has the ability to simply lie. And even to contradict his own lies. Many people don't care about policies; they take the benefits of the administrative state for granted and chafe at the restrictions. Trump got elected under false pretenses, pretending that he can do things that he can't do or, if he can, they will frequently make things worse for many people. But who cares as long as the Clintons go to jail, Obamacare is repealed, we'll kick out foreigners who don't belong here anyway, and everyone is free to discriminate against whoever they want for any reason they want. The Rs will undoubtedly see these next four years as their opportunity to privatize SS and get rid of Medicare by "giving" people some amount of money which they can buy insurance with. As if that money will actually be even close to enough for most people, especially for people over 65. And privatize national parks (or send them back to the states, which will amount to the same thing in many places) and sell off interstate highways, turning them into toll roads. This administration could turn into a billionaire's dream come true.

Bernie told the Dems what is important, but it was too late, and I never believed that their acceptance of him was anything more than political expediency. Helping small groups of disadvantaged folks is fine, but you don't highlight it in your campaign, they just don't have enough votes to matter. While I find Trump disgusting some of his issues are legitimate. I am closer to him on trade than I am to some Democrats. Democrats seem unable to grasp the concept that so called "free trade" is no different than the Republicans "trickle down economics". If you give companies an easy choice between $30 an hour labor costs and environmental regulations compared with $3.00 an hour labor costs and virtually no environmental regulations which do you think they will choose? I hope he does put up a tariff wall against China and other low wage countries but I will be pleasantly surprised if it happens. I refer to the base of the Republican Party as the stupid and the ignorant, which is true, but these folks have been the ones that have suffered the most from the outsourcing and exporting of jobs. The Republicans have politically been able to use it against Democrats because Dems were foolish enough to believe these trade deals were good for the economy. We need to see that we have an economy that provides them decent jobs. Trump's position on illegal immigration, while extreme, resonated because the average person knows that the Catholic countries south of our border use the U.S. as the safety value when their people breed like rabbits and then can't support their children. We don't need to deport those that are here but we need to stop illegal immigration. "Open borders" is the dumbest idea I have heard this year. It may lead to fascism in Europe and is leading us in that direction here as people rebel against it. We brought a knife to a gun fight and the result was predictable, but I didn't see it coming because Trump was so personally repugnant.
