Yesterday I was trying to short ENML and the trade was rejected because they didn't have the stock to loan. I called ETrade and asked how often they update this status (ie, should I keep trying to short or wait a day). The rep said they update it daily and then told me to hold. She spoke with a margin rep and came back on the line and told me that they would let me short as it was a small order (<1000 shares). As much as I have hated ETrade, they did come through this time.
