Makes me wonder if there is a solution.

From that article:
"With increased political polarization, amplified by homophily?—?our preference to connect to people like us?—?and algorithmic recommender systems, we’re effectively constructing our own realities."
And here we are on SI, part of the problem.

I've been feeling nostalgic of late for the time when it was possible, albeit sometimes precarious, to have discussions of general issues among folks of different perspectives on SI--nostalgic to the point where I went back and started rereading a thread from more than a decade ago in part to see if my memory was wearing rose-colored glasses. It wasn't, at least in contrast to the scenario described in that article. Actually, much of the discussion was more thoughtful and literate than I remembered.

Best I can tell, all spaces here have long since withdrawn to their own realities.

Shades of Pogo...

Fake news: All of these types of problems, are manifestations of the brave new world the human species has inadvertently created. And they can only be addressed, through understanding. That can only be achieved through education.

People really have to understand, that we cannot have civilization without understanding and this means developing the mind so that it can manage sophisticated problems like fake news.

This thread is a perfect example of an educated populace. And we don't get fooled very often here because everyone here has spent their life trying to understand and doing what it is necessary to achieve that. And we check each others ideas.

I look around at society and everywhere I look I see people not engaged in trying to understand things. But rather just living according to whatever dogma shaped them. Most of which is primitive. That's why I am such a zealot about affordable public education from preschool through college.

But there's no chance that is going to happen now, exactly at a most critical time In the evolution of civilization. That is the biggest loss from this election, the devolution of the human species, much like what happened after the barbarians wiped out ancient Greece and we devolved for the next 1400 years. Except this time, our primitive minds are very likely to start a nuclear war because they lack adequate understanding.

Fake News is not the only problem
bit.ly

This is a thorough and rather disturbing article- it shows in some detail how facts are manipulated and then spread across the internet and media.
Makes me wonder if there is a solution.

it's sad that the internet revolution that has allowed the world to connect with one another and spread great info to the masses has also turned into a great tool for liars and assholes to manipulate the ignorant masses

as someone once said... 'Falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after it.'

apparently human nature hasn't changed much, while technology and science keeps leaping forward
