The plane carrying the Brazilian soccer team actually ran out of fuel 11 miles from the airport in Colombia, after deciding to circle the airport a number of times while they tried to resolve a minor electrical problem.

One of the surviving passengers, Erwin Tumiri, said terrified passengers left their seats and started screaming as the CP-2933 plane began to plummet into a mountainside.

Tumiri says he was one of six to survive the disaster, which killed 71, because he 'followed safety procedures' remaining in his seat and tucking himself into a ball.

Pilots so focused on a minor problem that they lose track of how much fuel they have left!

In 1978 United Airlines Flight 173 did exactly the same thing outside Portland - en.wikipedia.org, as did Avianca Flight 52 outside JFK in 1990 - en.wikipedia.org.
