Every job I have had for about 20 years, I was an "employee at will" and could be terminated for any reason at all or for no reason. Seemed fair, since I could also terminate the employment for any or no reason.

It's more complicated than that.

For instance, non-compete clauses. 100% benefit to the company, 0% the employee.
But if you fire me it's void right? Oh hell no. We don't want you but we don't want anyone else to want you either.

And now some places expect you to give them 6 months notice if you are leaving.

It's a buyers market that's for sure. Fair is not an applicable term.
