Neanderthals and Homo sapiens bred together. We have much of their DNA in us and it is their DNA from being resistant to disease that we inherited from them that largely made it possible for us to be so successful. Well over 99% of our DNA is the same as the Neanderthals.

You have to evolve a long, long way from Neanthetal before you do any serious thinking.

Ah, you are letting old misconceptions of what Neandertal/Neanderthals were like cloud your judgement. There is no real reason to think they were intellectually inferior in any way. As more discoveries are made, we have come to realize that they led a complex existence. As did their predecessors and our common ancestors. There are some recent discoveries that indicate they engage in certain practices that almost certainly were religious in nature. Like prepping bodies for burial and other burial rituals. Flowers have been found in graves, at least some bodies were prepped by smearing them with ocre and a recent discovery in a cave where a child was buried indicates a rather elaborate ceremony was performed with horns of different animals, fires in containers and such.

There is no real reason to suspect that they lacked speech or many of the other characteristics that we often conclude are unique to our species. They made cave paintings and made ornaments to wear. They apparently engaged in some forms of trade.

They were human. They didn't make it, but that probably had more to do with being very specialized for the harsh conditions they lived in.
